¿Qué tal va el verano? Yo sin vacaciones aún. Hoy me gustaría hablaros de lo que supone vivir con un perro alérgico a
multitud de alimentos y los cuidados a seguir.

How is your summer going? I still do not have holidays. Today I would love to tell you what does it mean to live with a dog that is allergic to much food and the cares he needs.
Primero os pongo en antecedentes. Adoptamos a Lenny en julio
de 2013 y tenía entre 7 y 9 meses (en estas cosas es complicado saberlo), ya
vimos que estaba bastante delgadito pero con la vida que había tenido y que no
sabíamos muy bien de qué era cruce (seguimos sin saberlo, aunque parece que
algo de Golden hay) no nos preocupamos. Al principio engordó un kilo o dos,
pero a los seis meses lo había vuelto a perder. Lo que pasó entonces es que
empezó a rascarse como si no hubiese un mañana y le salieron muchas erupciones
por la zona de la tripita. Inmediatamente lo llevamos al veterinario (la
ventajas de tener una suegra veterinaria especialista en piel es que estas
cosas se identifican muy prontito, jeje) y le hicieron unas pruebas de alergia.
Salió que tenía alergia a muchiiiiiisimas cosas que llevan los piensos
(incluidos los buenos, que era de los que comía él).
First of all, I would love to tell
you how everything started. We adopted Lenny in July 2013 when he was between 7
and 9 months old (it is complicated to know in adoptions), we saw he was very
thin but with the life he has had and the fact that we did not know of which
breeds he is mixed (we still do not know, altough it seems that there is
something of Golden), we did not worry. In the beginning he gained one or two
kilos, but after six months he lost them. Then he started scratching himself
really hard because of the many outbreaks he had in his tummy. We took him
immediately to the veterianarian (the perks of having a veterinarian
mother-in-law specialised in the skin is that these things can be diagnosed
very soon) and he underwent some allergy tests. It ended up being that he was
allergic to plenty of food included in every dog feed (including the good
ones, which he ate).
Lenny era alérgico al maíz, al trigo, a la soja, a los
guisantes e incluso ¡al arroz! En ese momento teníamos que buscarle un pienso
sin nada de esas cosas (es complicado pero afortunadamente cada vez hay más
variedad) para que la alergia no fuese a más y tratar los sarpullidos que ya
tenía y evitar que se rascase (y curar las heridas que ya se había hecho).
Lenny is allergic to corn, wheat, soy,
peas and even, rice! In that moment we had to look for some feed with none of
these things (it is complicated but luckily there is a wider variety nowadays)
in order to not make it worse and treat the outbreaks he already had and stop
him from scratching (and cure the wounds he has already made himself with the
scratching).
Para que no se rascase le pusimos una camiseta del revés
(sacando el rabito por el cuello, las patas traseras por las mangas y haciendo
un agujero para las patas delanteras y con una cuerda con una tanca alrededor
de la cinturilla de la camiseta), un apaño muy artesanal pero efectivo hasta
que el “angelito” se las apañó para rascarse igualmente y le pusimos unas botitas
en las patas traseras (ambas cosas solo para estar en casa) y así aunque se
rascara no se clavaba las uñas. Para que mejorase la piel le tocaron baños
semanales con un champú especial para pieles atópicas (luego fuimos reduciendo
los baños a cada quince días y luego cada mes y ahora ya no hacen falta pero
sigo usando ese champú si alguna vez se reboza en algo y toca baño) y unos
complementos alimenticios de omega 3 y ácidos grasos que le encantaban y
opinaba que eran premios.
In order to avoid him from scratching
we made him a dress with a backwards T-shirt (pulling the tail through the head
openning and the hindlimbs through the sleeves and making a hole for the
forelimbs with a rope around the waist of the T-shirt adjusted through a
fastener), a pretty artesanal invention but effective until the “little angel”
found out how to scratch anyways and we made him wear some boots on the
hindlimbs (both things were only for staying at home) so he could scratch
without hurting himself. In order to improve his skin, we bathed him weekly
with a special shampoo for atopic skins (then we reduced the baths to every two
weeks, then monthly and now he does not
need them anymore but I keep using the shampoo if he ever needs a bath) and
some food complements with omega 3 and fat acids that he loved and thought of
as treats.

Para mantenerle sanote es complicado porque hay que estar
muy pendientes de que no coma nada del suelo (sobre todo pan) cuando sale, que
no se nos caiga nada en casa y que si se cae recogerlo inmediatamente porque
claro, él no sabe que le sienta mal. Además hay que ir pendiente de que nadie
le de premios de otros perros por la calle porque todos los premios que he
encontrado en el mercado tienen alguna de esas cosas y entonces esas personas
te miran mal porque no se lo acaban de creer. Además en nuestro caso tenemos
que andar con cuidado con otro tipo de “manjares” que pueda encontrar por ahí
porque la alergia le ha pasado factura al estómago y ahora el pobre se pone
malito con nada.
Keeping him healthy is complicated because with need to be careful for him not to eat anything from the floor (above all bread) when he is out; not to through anything to the floor at home and if we accidentaly do pick it fast because he does not know it does not suit him well. We also have to take care of no other dog-owner gives him treats in the park because every treat I have seen have some of these things and, then, those people give us a bad look because they do not believe us. Also, in our case, we have to take care of other kinds of “delicatessen” he might find because his allergy has taken his toll and now he gets sick quite easily.
Bueno, eso es todo. Lenny ahora está como una rosa y
nosotros paranoicos por si se come algo que no deba, jejeje. Si queréis saber
